swing-a-thon

How's fishing? Any bites? Where are you, how are the conditions, and what are you fishing for?

swing-a-thon

Just back from 5 days of fishing on NY's Salmon River........water was low, sun was high, and the entire state of New Jersey was there.I managed to catch some beautiful steelhead and a nice brown, I swung flies the entire time on my Scott 12'6" 8wt, and used an Airflo Delta w/ a 3.9 14ft polyleader. Got grabs on a number of different flies- best pattern was a purple spey fly- not sure of the name, but I am calling it the "suicide prevention fly". 2 days in a row,I was swinging from 6:30 am. and had nothing until 4:35pm...this fly got me 2 nice fish, the last of my trip was a 12lb buck. I spent alot of time on the water, fished w/ an old pal (my boss in Alaska- he was nymphing- so he had alot more action.) I met some new people, and I am happy to report that I saw many people swinging flies w/ two handed rods. and no split shot or indicators........the wave is rolling out east! My casting improved, and I think I have conditioned myself to finally stop using too much upper hand.........A great time- I am currently plotting and scheming a way to get back soon.....until then, I am dreaming of swinging flies and fishing the Lake Champlain tribs for a few remaining Landlocked salmon.

Adirondacker - crikey, i can't believe i didn't respond to this yet! I am so proud of you for swinging the whole time! Yes, it often gets less fish than nymphing, however i believe the swung SH caught are a little harder earned. (just my opinon!) There is something so magical about swinging down a run - its almost surreal.

Purple/opal is a great combo in BC. And, blue n black's work everywhere for Steelies.

Good on you girl. Glad you had fun. Its a little while before i get to wet my line again, but when i do it will be a swing a thon too.

Talk about it... -6 outside, big fat flakes...beauty night. Too bad my equip is garbage compared to nowadays, or i would ski again more. I rent when i go, but it isn't too often. I tend to snowmobile with my galpal and her b/f, but i secretly hate the machines as they are so noisy, obtrusive and smelly, not to mention environmentally destructive. However, i justify it as i only go at max, 6 times per winter. No haters plz!!!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I am so gonna come and fish with you at Wally's! My spring is being coordinated around that week.

I even left (made him take care of) two of my pontoon boats there, if you want to do a solo float one day. :) The boys can fish behind us! ;) If not, no prob...just an option.
