Help A Fellow Fly Fisher Girl Win A Million Dollars!

Jen McElroy and her husband read FFG on a regular basis, and wanted to share Jen’s story.
Jen entered âDr Oz’s Transformation Nation Million Dollar Youâ and has advanced from out of 1 million entrants to the final 10.
“I’ve been overweight since I was a teenager. My mom took me to see a nutritionist when I was a freshman in high schoolâthe earliest I remember knowing I had a problem. I have a family history with weight problems, so I just thought that was going to be my life and didn’t pay much attention to it. I tried to diet on my own, but something would stop me and I never really got it together. In July, 2010, weighing in at 382 pounds and battling active Crohn’s disease, I decided to change my life. I joined Weight Watchers and was able to lose some of the weight. Then my sister called me and asked me if I wanted to participate in a 5K. I immediately said yes. In 2011 I walked in six races (four 5Ks, one 9K and one 10K). I feel like having lost this amount of weight is awesome and I can finally live my life rather than watching it go by.”
Jen is a fly fisher girl, and traveled to Alaska for her fly fishing honeymoon.

Jen now…

This week everyone can vote (up to 10 times per day), and please do. If you can vote and pass this on to anyone else willing to take 30 seconds to do the 10 votes per day we fly fisher girls would sincerely appreciate it!

Fly Tying Tutorial – Claret Wiggly Nymph

Hook: #8 heavy wire wet/nymph.
Weight: Lead wire 0.4mm.
Thread: Danville’s Flymaster 70 Claret.
Tail: Black rabbit zonker fur.
Rib: Copper wire, brassie size.
Abdomen: Claret hare’s ear dubbing.
Shellback: Turkey tail.
Legs: Black spandex or any silicone rubber legs.
Thorax: Claret hare’s ear dubbing.
Head: Claret thread.
This fly has proven to be one the most productive carp flies that I have tied. It works in clear, stained, off color or muddy turbulent water. As far as I can tell the only thing that matters is if you fish it or not!
I tie all of mine exactly the same regardless of the depth or size of water that I will be fishing, and for carp size #8 standard shank seems to be the winning size. Once I complete the fly I liberally coat the shellback and head with hard as hull. This adds durability to the fly, although between the fish, snags, brush and trees I typically go through about a half dozen each time I go carp fishing…view full tutorial.
